Price development for mobile homes - up to 50% price increase

Introduction
It's no longer a secret that mobile homes have become more expensive. But are the current price increases really justified and actually due to the shortage of raw materials, increased energy prices and delivery problems?
Price development from 2020 to 2023
The following chart shows the price development of different mobile home manufacturers over the period 2020 to 2023. Each color represents a different manufacturer.

Tabular representation of the graphic | |||
---|---|---|---|
2021 | 2022 | 2023 | |
Biggest price increase | 13,49% | 11,42% | 27,69% |
Lowest price increase | 0,86% | 3,40% | 19,45% |
Average price increase | 2,82% | 5,37% | 19,85% |
How was the data determined?
Based on manufacturers' price lists, the price development of various mobile home models was determined and the respective mean price change per manufacturer was recorded.
Already at the turn of the year 2021 to 2022, prices were increased by an average of around five percent. But the recent price increase averages around 20% compared to last year.
In other words, a motorhome that cost €100,000 last year is already carrying a price tag of €120,000 this year.
The highest price increase determined for a single mobile home from 2022 to 2023 is 28.6%, the lowest price increase is 18.4%.
Price increase for individual motorhome models
In addition, the price development of individual models was evaluated cumulatively over the period 2020 to 2023.
The chart below shows that individual models are up to 50% more expensive today compared to 2020.

What are the reasons for these massive price increases?
Inflation
An essential factor for the massive price increases is an inflation rate of almost 10%. In recent decades, the inflation rate has been well below this value.
Inflation refers to the general increase in the price of services and products. Conversely, it can also be described as money becoming less valuable. You get less in return for the same amount.
High energy prices
The prices for oil, gas and electricity have risen enormously. There are different reasons for the strong increase. The essential factor, however, is the Russian war of aggression. The effects of the pandemic also play a major role.
Supply chains
Due to the pandemic, supply chains have been disrupted. Many products are imported from China. The lockdowns in China also brought the ports to a standstill.
Freight costs
Transport costs are also increasing due to high energy prices. Ocean freight costs have increased by several hundred percent since the pandemic began.
Have fewer motorhomes been sold because of the price increase?
In 2022, according to the Caravaning Industry Association, 18.3% fewer motorhomes were newly registered in Germany. However, the reason for this does not necessarily have to be declining demand.
Supply chain problems and a lack of available chassis meant that fewer motorhomes could be produced and thus registered.
Approval of motorhomes in other European countries
The European Caravan Federation (ECF) has published the new registrations of motorhomes in Europe from January 2022 to September 2022. In most European countries, the picture is similar to that in Germany. On average, 19.5% fewer motorhomes were registered in European countries during this period.
When will mobile homes be cheaper again?
There will probably not be a significant drop in price. If the overall situation calms down in the future, there will be little or no price increases for a longer period of time, but it is unlikely that prices for mobile homes will generally fall.
Are there still cheap mobile homes?
Yes, there are still cheap mobile homes.

Conclusion
The economy has been in crisis mode for several years now. The recent price increases are the result of this. It will probably take some time before the crises are over. It remains to be seen whether this will result in mobile homes becoming cheaper again.
